Arts & Social Change

This is one class that Tom has taught that he did not create. It was launched in 1996 as the signature class at the School of the Art Institute to investigate the connections between the artist, the community and social change.

We created a blog site for each of the two years (2007, 2008) I worked on this class. In the first year, the students curated and produced a fully staged art exhibit in one day that was up for one day. In the second year, the students researched themes around “40 years After 1968” and produced and distributed multiples of original publications based on their research.

Here are images from the exhibit created and managed by students from the 2007 class. The exhibit was called “Take The Street With You.”

  1. I find it inspiring how this art program encourages student collaboration, creativity, and engagement with social issues.

  2. The class was a pleasure to design and teach. The students came up with creative and stimulating work and public actions!
