Fighting Megaprojects

No Games Chicago book cover

I have considerable experience in organizing against megaprojects that threaten to gobble up billions of public dollars and grab vast swathes of public land. I helped stop the privatization of Lincoln Park in 2008 by co-founding Protect Our Parks. The story of the Latin School Lincoln Park Land Grab is summarized at www.wesavedlincolnpark.org.

In 2009 I was a co-leader of the No Games Chicago campaign that worked to spike Chnicago’s Bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. We did it! This incredible story is told for the first time in my book No Games Chicago – How A Small Group of Citizens Derailed the CIty’s 2016 Olympic Bid. The book’s companion website at http://www.nogameschicagobook.com contains all sorts of primary materials from the campaign – including press releases, flyers, reports, images, news clips, and Extra Chapters. There is also a Strategic Playbook with a ton of resources that you can use to fight a megaproject that threatens your city!

I am seeking collaborators from programs that study politics, urban planning, social justice, public policy, sport, the Olympics, hospitality, and economic development to create classes around interogating and organizing against megaprojects. Interested? Contact me at tom at tresser dot com!
